The photographs in Pixy Liao’s photobook “Experimental Relationship Vol. 1.1” are a humorous yet sincere examination of Liao’s relationship with a younger man. Raised in China, Liao had been brought up with the expectation that she will be the younger, less responsible part of a relationship. In the end, she got together with Moro, a man five years her junior. This divergence from the authority and power dynamic she had expected becomes a central part of her playful and very charming series. Artist statement: This book is mainly a collection of photos from Experimental Relationship project from 2007 to 2017. As a woman brought up in China, I used to think I could only love someone who is older and more mature than me, who can be my protector and mentor. Then I met my current boyfriend, Moro. Since he is 5 years younger than me, I felt that whole concept of relationships changed, all the way around. I became the person who has more authority & power. One of my male friend
