The title of the air came from the name of County Londonderry, and was collected by Jane Ross. The origin of the tune was for a long time somewhat mysterious. The most popular lyrics for the tune are Danny Boy,  written by English lawyer Frederic Weatherly, in 1910, and set to the tune in 1913. Mekara made the arrangement for Flute, BbClarinet and Alto Saxophone.
