It is commonly found in rocky outcrops, dry woodlands, and meadows. Especially attractive to hummingbirds and supports several specialized native bees (Melissodes fimbriatus & Lasioglossum oenotherae). Birds eat its seeds. This plant can be a vigorous grower so it is best used in naturalized meadows or as erosion control on banks.
