SOLD1855 Kellogg $50 Commemorative Restrike S.S. Central America Shipwreck PCGS Gem proof gold. We recently bought 2 of these Kellogg $50 Restrikes from a collection out of Florida that’s been off the market for 20 years. These are fresh. Under the authorization and sanction of the California Historical Society, a limited number of commemorative gold coins were struck with gold from the rare Kellogg & Humbert gold ingots recovered from the wreck of the SS Central America, the "Ship of Gold." Incredibly, these coins were struck with working dies transferred from John Grover Kellogg's original 1855 dies, and the gold used from 69 actual California gold rush monetary ingots recovered from this very popular shipwreck. The S.S. Central America was a three-masted steamer ship that was often used to transport gold from the California Gold Rush to the eastern seaboard of the United States.
