Another product of master Japanese plant breeder Tony Sato (see Lithops salicola "Sato's Violet" from this week's update), Astrophytum superkabuto originated with a mutation that occurred in just one field-collected individual of A. asterias found in 1981 by the Japanese Mr. Masaomi Takeo who then sold to Tony Sato at a high price in Japan.
