This is a color mutation of Armadillidium vulgare, a large species believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region. It has since become a cosmopolitan species. There are two cultivars of this morph within the hobby, the USA line and the Japanese line, named for where they were isolated. The American line is said to be less prolific and larger in body size than the Japanese line. In addition to the size and reproductive differences, the American line has more numerous and prominent yellow blotching than the Japanese line. This species is known for its prolific breeding and ease of cultivation. Like all Armadillidiidae, they can roll into a ball when disturbed. They prefer drier conditions and higher ventilation, much like other European Armadillidium species.
