About This PaintingMy adoration for Hayao Miyazaki’s turbulent and wonderful 2008 animated film Ponyo is so big it was bound to spill over into some kind of art. I spent many happy days painting this intricately-detailed little gouache piece in hopes of capturing the spirit of Ponyo and Sosuke in my own style and medium. What I love most about Ponyo is the rowdy innocence and the chaos of it: how much respect it pays to the inner lives and escapades of very young children; how reverently it treats their attachments and friendships as things capable of enduring and of holding great meaning. And how kindly it nods to that tremulous hope we’re all perhaps harboring: that our loves can survive our differences, that we can, in spite of everything, find a way to be together and no one hurt.
