To extend the life of your candle, allow your candle to reach a "full melt pool" before extinguishing the flame. A "full melt pool" is when wax melts all the way to the sides of the jar. This may take anywhere between 1-3 hours. Maintaining a full melt pool during each burn will prevent "tunneling"—when a candle's wick is lower than the surrounding wax—and minimize soot/mushrooming of carbon on the end of the wick.
