Your space must be a minimum of 15 feet long by 8 feet wide by 8 feet high.  You should be able to take a full swing comfortably in this space. If not, you could see shorter distances or inaccurate metrics and a larger space will be necessary. Now we can place your mat in the play space. The mat will need to be a minimum of 2 feet long by 2 feet wide. However, for the best experience we recommend a mat size large enough for you to stand on and hit the ball on the same level. When using an impact screen or net, make sure the ball, on your mat, is at least 8 feet away. Using a longer distance could improve accuracy. With your tee location complete, we can now place the Approach on the ground between 6 and 8 feet behind the mat location.   Our recommended position is 7 feet behind the ball. Use the red line on the top of the Approach to align the ball to your target. To help with alignment you could also lay down a golf club between the alignment line and tee. You can now safely position your golf bag and smartphone where you can quickly view your shot’s data. You may choose to position your bag next to the Approach when video recording your swing. Simply open the Garmin Golf App and select a sim session. Now we’re ready to take some swings! To learn more about the available Sim features, see our video Garmin Golf App Features for the Approach R10. Depending on your setup or environment you may experience inaccuracies, see our Overcoming Challenges section below to learn more.     Outdoor Setup Whether you are hitting into a net or at a driving range, first make sure you are confident taking a full swing in your hitting space. If not, you could see shorter distances or inaccurate metrics. A larger space may be necessary. Your hitting space or mat will need to be a minimum of 2 feet long by 2 feet wide. However, for the best experience we recommend a mat size large enough for you to stand on and hit the ball on the same level. When using an impact screen or net, make sure the ball, on your mat, is at least 8 feet away. Using a longer distance could improve accuracy. With our tee location complete, we can now place the Approach on the ground between 6 and 8 feet behind the mat location.   Our recommended position is 7 feet behind the ball. Overcoming Challenges There should be a clear and unobstructed view from the Approach R10 to the ball when preparing your hitting space.  Approach R10 should be near the same height as the ball hitting space. You can place a wood block or another flat object under the Approach R10 to raise it. Use the tripod stand that came with the Approach R10. Using other mounts, or attempting to attach it to a wall, could result in inaccurate readings or error messages. Your Approach R10 does not need to be completely level, as it will automatically account for slight dips in its side-to-side positioning. We also recommend using a similar type of golf ball that you typically use on the course. This should be a regulation golf ball. To learn more, see Using Practice Balls With Garmin Golf Radar Products Ensure the Approach R10 has a green flashing LED at the beginning of each swing. Any pre-swing movement or pause mid-swing may result in a false detection or missed shot. When using a net, we recommend that it matches the size of your space, to ensure that you can swing with confidence. When preparing your hitting area, remove objects, such as fans and heaters, from your surroundings. These types of objects are known to cause radar interference. Metallic or shiny surfaces and structures may impact performance. This includes finished garage floors and light poles. When used near these types of surfaces or objects remove or cover with carpet, artificial turf, or dull fabric.  Some indoor setups may require you to cover the floor, walls and ceiling. To avoid radar interference, your area should be free from large objects or electronics like AC Units, refrigerators and fluorescent lights. We recommend removing objects such as vehicles or TVs, so that you can swing confidently.  When at a driving range, try to leave space on both sides. Nearby golfers may cause interference with the radar. If you have checked over all of the setup tips but are experiencing consistently inaccurate data, such as distance and launch angle, then we would recommend preforming a calibration to the Approach R10. See Troubleshooting Radar Features of the Approach R10 for additional help.    Installing the Magnetic Tripod Mount WARNING Both the device and its mount may contain magnets. Under certain circumstances, magnets may cause interference with some internal medical devices, including pacemakers and insulin pumps. Devices and mounts that contain magnets should be kept away from such medical devices.   NOTICE The mount contains a magnet. Under certain circumstances, magnets may cause damage to some electronic devices, including hard drives in laptop computers. Use caution when the mount is near electronic devices. Ensure the tripod mount is free of any debris. Insert the top of the tripod mount into the back of the device. The tripod mount is magnetic and holds the device in place. NOTE: The tripod mount can only be installed one way. If it is not fully seated in the back of the device, you have installed it using the wrong orientation. Open the tripod legs so they are fully extended. FAQ Can I use the Approach R10 in low lighting? Yes. The device uses radar to detect your shots, so the lighting does not have any effect. However, lighting will be needed for Swing Capture recording.   Will I need special tools to setup my Approach R10? No. You can use two clubs to measure close to the 6-8 ft. distance or use a measuring tape.    Do I need a perfectly level floor or surface? No. The Approach R10 compensates for some degree of tilt. If the tilt is too great, the Garmin Golf app will alert you on your first swing.   Should the Approach R10 be raised from the ground? This depends on the setup. If the surface the ball is on is raised, then the bottom of the Approach R10 (above the tripod) needs to be above the surface the ball is placed on.   What if the Approach R10 appears to be missing shots? Ensure you are using a regulation golf ball, see - Using Practice Balls With Garmin Golf Radar Products. Ensure the R10 has a green flashing LED at the beginning of each swing. Try to swing with good form and a normal golf tempo or the shot data could be missed. For example, a pause of 1 second or longer at the top of the backswing could lead to data not being recorded.
