One of its most renowned missions was the rescue operation of Umberto Nobile and his surviving crew after their airship Italia crashed on the ice during their return from the North Pole in 1928. In 1933, 'Krassin' achieved another remarkable feat by becoming the first vessel to reach the previously inaccessible northern shores of Novaya Zemlya in the history of navigation.
