Show everyone where you are from with your very own Alaska State Flag! Alaska Flag Facts A little over 30 years before Alaska became a state, the Alaska Department of the American Legion sponsored a contest for Alaskan children. Benny Benson, a 13 year old, won the contest in 1927. Benny's design was chosen to represent the future flag of the Territory of Alaska. The flag of Alaska consists of eight gold stars, forming the Big Dipper and Polaris. The Big Dipper symbolizes a bear, an animal indigenous to Alaska. The stars depicted on the flag can be used as a guide to locate Polaris and determine true north.
