This nice goban set came to Baduk Club from a private home in Osaka. The seller says, "I've been sorting through some items that were in my parents' house." It includes a spruce board, go bowls, and slate & shell stones. The go board is 14cm thick, an average size. It stands about 26cm tall with legs on. It looks like Shin-kaya with a brilliant Shihou-masa style cut. This is a quarter-sawn board, and this particular cross-cut results in parallel lines on all 6 sides of the board. This kind of cut is the highest regarded for fine boards, not normally possible except in the case of the thickest trees. It is most likely Alaskan Spruce, which grows faster and larger. The corners and edges are quite clean, so it is in excellent shape. A fresh paste-wax coating can still be a good idea to help it slowly adjust, especially if your climate is less humid than Japan.
