Pinus nigra (Austrian Pine) is a medium to large evergreen tree of broad and conical habit when young, developing an irregular, dense, spreading flattopped crown atop a short straight trunk over time. The lush foliage of dark green, often curved and slightly twisted needles, is borne in bundles of two and persists for 4-7 years on the tree. The ovoid cones are green when young, ripening gray- buff to shiny yellow-buff. They open over the winter and fall in the third spring. Very attractive on mature trees, the bark is thick, scaly-plated, gray-brown to pinkish. Makes an excellent specimen, screen, or windbreak.
