CLEVELAND BELLOW ANGELA DAVIS “CATCH A SALE” 1973 SIGNED SCREENPRINT BAY AREA BLACK ACTIVIST ARTIST
Cleveland Bellow (American, 1946-2009), "Catch a Sale," 1973, screenprint, signed and dated upper right, titled upper left, edition 1/100, sheet: 24"h x 20"w, overall mounted on matte board 26"h x 22"w. The signature indicates the piece is 1 of an edition of 100, but it is likely no other examples exist. The piece features a portrait of a woman who is presumably feminist, political activist, philosopher, academic, and author Angela Davis. Bellow's "Catch a Southern Beauty," a similar piece to this one, of the same size and similar theme, sold by Swann Galleries in Oct. 2024 for $4160 (with buyer's premium.) A scarce, early work by a central figure in the San Francisco Bay Area art scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Cleveland Bellow's work has been rising in popularity and value. His artwork was included in the traveling exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power organized by the Tate Modern, London.
