Pearl Harbor Submarine in Vallejo CA at Mare Island Canvas
This photo is of a sunk Japanese submarine from Pearl Harbor. It was taken in Vallejo California at Mare Island shipyard in the early 1940's. The US Government paraded the captured Japanese submarine around the USA as a way to raise war bonds to support the war effort. Mare Island Shipyard received the radio messages from Pearl Harbor of the Japanese attack on the morning of December 7, 1941. It was the first location in the United States to hear about the attack. The Naval yard then relayed the message up the chain of command. This photo was taken as part of the Farm Security Administration by the federal government and was downloaded directly from a government source; the Library of Congress. It is a public domain image.
