They traverse a rocky path along the base of a mountain. New life sprouts along a small river that meanders across the canvas, likely fresh snowmelt. Rocks in the painting’s foreground are robust and boldfaced, sharpened by shadows, and contrasted by fine details as small as the light reflecting in the packhorse’s mane. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush as well as actors Burt Reynolds and Dick Van Dyke collected Kerswill’s paintings.
