Carlos Rodriguez’s practice—spanning paintings, drawings and ceramics—explores the male body, issues of gender and identity, and sexual desire as a creative impulse. The Mexico City-based artist is inspired by classical painting and primitive art, and feels a special connection with self-taught artists such as Henri Rousseau and Hector Hyppolite. Populated with references to mythology, science, poetry and themes related to body positivity, his playful works often depict scenes of men engaged in various games and fantasies. The second of Rodriguez’s collaborations with ART FOR CHANGE, Garras Protectoras, represents the instincts of protection and companionship. Within the work, a bear’s body provides a cave-like shelter to a male character, alluding to early Paleolithic cultures wherein mankind worshipped animals as magical spirits.
