Description McMurdo SmartFind G8 AIS EPIRB With GPS and AIS, Category II Manual Release In the event of an emergency, an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a safety device carried by a vessel that alerts search and rescue personnel and allows them to rapidly locate you. It emits a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency, which is monitored by the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system, when it is engaged. The alarm is subsequently communicated to the nearest Rescue Coordination Centre via an earth station (RCC). With an EPIRB, you can call for help from anywhere on the earth, without having to pay a membership, no matter how far away you are!
