Querciabella is one of the historic Italian estates that helped put Super Tuscans on the map. Founded by Guiseppe Castiglioni, the estate has been a benchmark in Tuscany for decades. Along with such iconic wines as Antinori's Tignanello and Montevertine's Le Pergole Torte, Querciabella caused a sea change in Chianti with the release of Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon blend Camartina in 1981. The original wine was a major rule breaker in Chianti due to the inclusion of the 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot. The huge success of Camartina, along with other Super Tuscans, forced a change to the appellation and blending rules in Tuscany. Camartina was so influential that Querciabella was invited to join 16 other estates in the Historical Super Tuscan Wine Committee, which honors their contributions to the history and promotion of Tuscan wines.
