What is colon cleanse? In a colon cleanse, the contents of the colon (large intestine) are flushed. Preparation for certain medical procedures, such as a colonoscopy, is a customary practice. A colon cleanse may be prescribed by a physician to individuals with chronic constipation or fecal incontinence to promote regular bowel movements. However, some practitioners of complementary health recommend colon detoxification for overall well-being. Colonic detoxification, alternatively referred to as colonic irrigation and colonic hydrotherapy, originates in ancient Greece. In the early 1900s, it gained attention in the United States.
