It’s easy to confuse Japanese silk paper with actual silk paper. Actual silk paper is made using silk fibers.  But Japanese silk paper is not! Japanese silk paper is a thin paper, like tissue paper, but is much stronger and made from plant fibers. It gets its name from the silky feel of the paper once formed and is made using ancient Japanese techniques. It can be made from fibers of many different plants, including the kōzo plant (Broussonetia papyrifera, paper mulberry tree), the mitsumata (Edgeworthia chrysantha) shrub and the gampi tree (Diplomorpha sikokiana). Although this is an oversimplification of the process, the pulp from these plants are cooked in an alkaline solution, rinsed, beaten and formed into paper. It can be made today with a machine or using a traditional screen.  WHAT CAN I USE JAPANESE SILK PAPER FOR?  The resulting tissue paper is surprisingly strong, takes on color beautifully and can be used in a variety of craft and non craft ways.
