With the need for a more affordable, faster to produce and lighter submachine gun, the United States military went to General Motors to produce a system to match the effectiveness of seen by their British allies and German counter-parts. Utilizing stamped steel, the M3 submachine gun - or more commonly referred to as the Grease Gun or Greaser - was significantly lighter and easier to mass produce than the original M1A1. The Grease Gun was adopted into military service December 1942, but saw use through World War II. Even through it did not fully replace the Thompson, the Grease Gun saw continued service by many US armored units all the way until the 1990s.
