In 2007, the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) was looking to find a new platform to possibly replace the tried and true M4 rifle. Designed by Belgian arms manufacturer FN Herstal the Special Operation Forces Combat Assault Rifle - or SCAR, was picked up due to its reliable, low-maintenance and modular performance in testing trials. Between 2009 and 2010, a battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment was deployed into the country armed with the SCAR-L, and its larger caliber counterpart the SCAR-H.
