The concept and development for a French bullpup weapon originally began a few years after World War II; however, due to budgeting constraints and foreign conflicts, the concept remained in the prototype phase and was delayed for several years. In 1967, the project – under the title of FAMAS – resumed. Between 1967 and 1972, the FAMAS went through the development, prototyping, and evaluation processes. By 1978, the FAMAS F1 was adopted into the French military and became standard issue for many of their units. Since its inception, France’s unique bullpup assault rifle has seen service through a number of conflicts and operations in Europe, Africa, Middle East, and South East Asia.
