This is a Cold War-era Flight Controller component of the A-10/F-5 Automatic Pilot system MIL-C-5206A as used in the US Air Force jet fighters F-86 Sabrejet and F-84 Thunderjet (see page from the F-86K Flight Manual).  Made by Lear (Model 996H, part number 94923-01), USAF stock number 6615-515-5275, with a serial number prefix of AF-56, indicating a year of manufacture of 1956. Our example has a yellow tag (Serviceable, Incomplete Status and Hold Tag) dated 1957, indicating the "using organization" was TFS 169. Our research indicates that TFS 169 was likely the 169th Tactical Fighter Squadron, a unit of the Illinois Air National Guard that used F-84's.  The controller is mounted to a frame which also has two push-button switches, marked Automatic Altitude and Altitude Off.  We have not determined the nature of this configuration.  The controller is in good condition given its age. The knob marked On/Off may require power in order to turn, but all other knobs/dials rotate.  Measures ~6
