The California wildfires are adding to an already dire situation. In fact, the recent surge in global wildfires has led to a staggering 60% increase in carbon dioxide emissions since 2001, with emissions nearly tripling in climate-sensitive northern boreal forests. In 2023 alone, Canada's wildfires released approximately 640 million metric tons of carbon—comparable to the annual fossil fuel emissions of a large industrialized nation. Now, California wildfires are raging, destroying homes, property and history. While much help is needed in that area right now, for both people and animals, something that often gets overlooked is the dangerous emissions produced by these blazes.
